Although election of officers is on the agenda, December will primarily be a social event. See the listing on page 2 of the newsletter for a detailed description of who was nominated at the November meeting.

All members are encouraged to bring their spouse or friend along with a “pot luck” dish to share for the December meeting. Beverages will be provided.

Our guest speaker this month is Lennie Merdan. Lennie specializes in building boxes. He is an excellent resource for information related to joints, inlays, and material selection. He is very down to earth and downright enjoyable to converse with.

Nominations of officers will be part of the November meeting. There is a detailed description of open positions for which we will ask for nominations on sheet 2 of the newsletter.

Back in April, we demonstrated the Spindle Roughing Gauge. Our intent is to highlight different tools throughout the year. We would like to continue this month with the Skew Chisel. Discussion will include its basic uses and sharpening tips. You’ll have an opportunity to make some shavings. With hands-on activities we’ll learn techniques from each other on a full size and a mini lathe. Bring your own Skew Chisel if you like. We’re particularly looking for an Alan Lacer type radius grind if you have one. Don’t forget to bring show & tell item/s. We’ll also try a third time to have a demonstration by Dick Beumer on lidded boxes.

Our November challenge project is a utility item (salt & pepper shakers, rolling pin, spoons, et.). If you don’t have an item to bring, tell us about the item you attempted!

The October CMWA club meeting will feature a demonstration by Brad Knowles using his turning mill to make decorative candlesticks and other items. We will meet at our usual Sauk Rapids/Rice Middle School woodshop at 7:00 PM.

The October Woodturners Meeting will be held at 9:00AM Saturday October 18th at the home of Dick Beumer, 3750 15th Street NE, Sauk Rapids. Bring an item/s for show-n-tell. Our challenge item this month is a candlestick or candle holder. We’ll begin a series on turning lidded boxes. Call Dick 251-7013 or Gary 252-2764 with questions and/or directions.

The September meeting will be held in the parking lot at the Sauk Rapids Middle School. The meeting time was changed to 6:00 to give us enough time before dark. There is no formal program planned. Instead, we will be having a sort of tailgating event. It is intended to be a social event where we can get to know each other better. Kurt Zinewski will be bringing BBQ’s and John Wilson has agreed to bring the buns, condiments and chips. Beverages will be supplied by the CMWA.

The September meeting of the Woodturners Group will be Saturday the 13th at 9:00am at the home of Gary Mrozek, 1314 West Oakes Drive, St. Cloud (see map). The agenda includes a demonstration on vacuum chucking and hands-on products and techniques comparisons of sanding on the lathe. Bring samples of sandpaper (sheets or discs) you like or don’t like and share your successes and/or failures and frustrations with the group. We will also begin a series on lidded boxes. Our project challenge is something with a knot or knots in it.

The August meeting will be held at Ferche Millwork's (main office) in Rice at 7:00pm. There will be a presentation with a video showcasing their 50th anniversary. Afterward there will be a tour of the plant and a showing of their products.

Note: This month's board meeting will be held at Coborn's Cafe at 5:45pm.
