July Woodturners Group Meeting Recap

Our monthly wood turners meeting took place at Dick Beumer’s shop Saturday, July 12th. The meeting opened with a show and tell segment, where wood turners presented different projects that they have completed. A couple of presenters were Dick Beumer, JoAnn Johnson, John Gaye and Jake Schneider. Dick presented his natural edge bowls cut of pieces of maple. JoAnn displayed some beautiful pens turned out of some mohagany and rosewood. John showed off an attractive box made out of cedar. Finally, Jake presented his unique baseball bat wind chime that was made out of maple.

Directions to Greg’s are as follows:
From highway 10 in Royalton, take County Road 26 (also known as Nature Road) West to Bowlus. Turn North on County Road 24 (also known as 120th avenue). After about ½ mile, 24 turns into 238. Keep going North on 238 for about 3 miles until you reach 80th street. Turn East on 80th street and Greg’s place is ½ mile on the north side of the road.

Our next Woodturner's meeting will be June 14th at 9:00 AM at the shop of Tom Homan, 104 Hill Street West, St. Joseph. We will be continuing our series on bowl turning with various methods and products for finishing your bowl. Our project challenge for June will be “Something That Makes Noise”. Examples include whistles, wind chimes, duck calls and music boxes.

May Woodturners Group Meeting Recap

The Woodturners Group met at Dick Beumer’s shop on Saturday, May10th. Dick demonstrated his Oneway 1640 lathe with the Oneway Easy Core attachment. The Easy Core System allows you to remove multiple nested bowl blanks from one piece of wood. With a 14” piece of black walnut he was able to make three individual bowls. Where conventional hollowing would have produced a mountain of shavings, Dick had but a few handfuls of waste.

The first meeting is intended to provide an arena for members to mingle and become familiar with each other’s business interests. At this time, there is no cost for membership and all who are interested in attending are welcome. If you plan on attending, please contact Scott Randall so that he can arrange for the appropriate materials and space.

This meeting is expected to last about 90 minutes and the agenda will be as follows:
- BBW goals
- Introductions
- An inventory of resources
- The components of a marketing plan
- Round table discussion of future topics
- A real time marketing success story
