New Classes for Spring 2027
Build a Three-Leg Stool with Grace Ambrose
January 23 and 24, 2027: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: $280
These stools are perfect for setting and sitting — use them as side tables, extra seating, plant stands, and more. They'll find a home in any room of your house!
This class provides a perfect introduction to the fundamentals of staked furniture and techniques that are essential for chair making. We’ll use hand tools with an assist from a few power tools to create a low staked stool. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to personalize the design. On Day One, we’ll make tapered, tenoned legs and drill holes in the seat, learning the basics of how to lay out rake and splay angles. On Day Two, we’ll shape our stretchers and assemble our stools.
Tools and materials included. We will send out a list of hand tools before the class if you wish to bring your own.

The best new tool in your shop might end up being an 80-year-old hand plane.

In this class, he will demonstrate how to tear down a plane to its base chassis and teach you how to rebuild it into a classic. You will leave the class with a well-tuned Stanley Bailey plane and the knowledge to rebuild any bench plane.
Tools and materials included. You will take home the plane you restore.
The Art of the Box with Michael Cullen
April 12 -16, 2027: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: $790
Create unique boxes, incorporating color and carved texture. Be prepared to veer off the path into creative territory.
This highly creative five-day workshop, taught by renowned furniture maker Michael Cullen, will explore ideas in box making that fall outside the typical six-sided container. You will design and build two to three small boxes and construct them with the safe operation of the bandsaw and an array of hand tools. We will explore shaping and sculpting boxes to create pleasing curves, unusual shapes and just about anything that falls under the category of fun and zany. A primary focus in the workshop will be on creating patterns and textures and applying color to the boxes’ interior and exterior surfaces. During the course, you will learn how to sharpen and use gouge and v-tool carving tools and how to use milk paint to enhance your work.
This class is perfect for the beginner who is curious about making things from wood and is excellent for the expert wanting to take a different tack on making boxes.
Tools and material included, but not limited to: gouges and chisels, files and rasps, and some machinery. A list will be available beforehand if participants wish to bring their own tools.
Just a reminder that when you sign up for a class, you automatically become a member of the CMWA.
